Basic Facts
Massage is well known for reducing stress and promoting relaxation. And, a growing body of research also shows that massage therapy is effective for relieving and managing chronic pain, a significant national health problem. According to the National Institute for Health, nearly one-third of all Americans will suffer from chronic pain at some point in their lives, and approximately 14 percent of all employees take time off from work due to pain.
Increasingly, massage therapy is being incorporated into pain management programs of hospitals and health care organizations. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has suggested massage therapy as one means to manage pain without use of pharmaceuticals.

The Mind Body Connection
Over the past two decades, Cancace Pert, Ph.D., a professor of biophysics at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington , D.C. , has been studying the biochemistry of emotions. What she and her colleagues have found is that emotions aren’t all in our heads-they affect our whole bodies. In fact, the chemical processes that are caused by our emotions occur on the surface of every single body cell.
As a result of this mind-body link, “bad” emotions-such as stress-can have a negative impact on every body organ, including those that support our immune system. And because the immune system is the body’s main defense against infectious disease and cancer, a blow to your immunity is a blow to your general health, as well. So it stands to reason that the less your fret, the better your physical state will be.

Simply put, stress is a signal that something needs to change. It’s the body-mind’s innate response to internal and external factors that disrupt normal functioning or disturb emotional, cognitive or physical well-being.
Perhaps you’ve heard stories of, say, a 5’2” mother suddenly lifting a car to save her baby? That’s the “Fight or Flight” response of the central nervous system that occurs whenever stress, fear, anger or pain, are present…in this case, working FOR her? In this automatic reaction, pulse quickens, blood flow to the large muscle groups increases (as if literally preparing to do battle…or run for our lives!). Respiration quickens and becomes more shallow, and stress hormones release to help us do what we must.

Stress can negatively affect your body in more ways than you may think. A stressful, workaholic lifestyle that is frequently out of balance has many unforeseen consequences. We usually recognize this only when it dramatically confronts us. We may get a violent pain in our abdomen whenever we eat, or we may suddenly feel tired all the time when we normally have boundless energy.
Our wake-up call may be a massive heart attack, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), frequent migraine headaches or an incapacitating neck or back pain that makes it difficult to sleep, walk, sit or stand without pain. When continual high levels of stress erode the body’s strength and resiliency, our body begins to fall apart. Here is how it happens.
